Boyanna Trayanova

Boyanna Trayanova

Boyanna Trayanova’s versatile and high-powered drumming has made her a key player on the New Orleans music scene. One of the region’s few female drummers, Boyanna has been attracting attention for her monster chops and funky, in-the-pocket feel.

Boyanna was born in 1980 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Seeking to escape the deteriorating political and economic conditions of the former communist country, Boyanna’s family immigrated from Bulgaria to the United States in 1990. Boyanna eventually became naturalized as a US citizen in 2000.

Boyanna began playing the drums in the sixth grade at the age of 11. In 1995, Boyanna moved to New Orleans where she attended Ben Franklin High School, and later, Tulane University. Inspired by the city’s rich musical heritage, Boyanna continued her interest in the drums and began pursuing a professional career in music. She has played the drums for numerous local bands and artists spanning different genres from jazz and funk to Afrobeat and blues. Some noteworthy acts Boyanna has played or recorded with include carnival parade favorites the Panorama Brass Band, master African percussionist Seguenon Kone, and pedal steel virtuoso Dave Easley. Boyanna has toured extensively both in the U.S. and abroad and currently enjoys her status as one of New Orleans’ most in-demand drummers.
